As directed in AMIA’s 2015-2020 Strategic plan, AMIA has been exploring certification opportunities for the full spectrum of professionals who practice applied health informatics.  This strategy responds to the expanding knowledge base used by health informatics professionals and the formalization of the field as exemplified by accredited graduate education programs.  AMIA’s work on this front includes development of proposed eligibility criteria in 2016, an extensive survey of the health informatics workforce in 2017, and a rigorous analysis of health informatics practice in 2018.  The results of these activities are informing AMIA’s development of a health informatics certification program. This session will provide an update on AMIA’s efforts to establish health informatics certification and outline next expected steps along with exploring relationships to other AMIA activities such as accreditation and careers.
