Description

Creativity, imagination, innovation…these are necessary ingredients for a learning environment positioned to solve problems and improve lives today and into the future. The field of health informatics is no exception. The diverse group of students in Master’s programs for health informatics reflect the interdisciplinary and diverse nature of the field, stemming from a diverse professional background, including clinicians working full time in health care, as well as students who have never worked in health care. This diversity provides a unique opportunity to examine and solve problems in distinctive ways. This is the starting point we use to foster innovative thinking among students in the online Master’s program. This presentation highlights strategies we have used to foster innovative thinking among students, including in-class exercises and advisor guided independent brainstorming, leading to an innovation “tour”.
